* Study: Privacy implications of email tracking [PDF]
We show that the simple act of viewing emails contains privacy pitfalls for the unwary. We assembled a corpus of commercial mailing-list emails, and find a network of hundreds of third parties that track email recipients via methods such as embedded pixels. About 30% of emails leak the recipient’s email address to one or more of these third parties when they are viewed. In the majority of cases, these leaks are intentional on the part of email senders, and further leaks occur if the recipient click [...]

8 Brands Using Email Personalization Like Pros [GFX]
1. Sephora leverages VIP status. Sephora is killing it when it comes to personalization. Of course, they use personalization in the subject line, but they take it one step further by including personalization in the content of the email. It’s just one extra way to say, “Hey Allie, we care about you and your makeup preferences.” [...]

The most surprising email marketing trends from Black Friday
The 5-day stretch between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday is the busiest time of year for email marketing. It’s also the best time of year to hunt for trends and see the best (and the worst) email marketing examples in your inbox. Sometimes called Cyber Week, the email marketing stakes are high this time of year. Email alone contributes up to 20% of all revenue on Black Friday. The pressure is on retailers to stand out from all the other inbox noise. [...]

Is Email Tracking The Next Big Privacy Concern?
Wired magazine has come out with a damning piece on a widely used but little studied email capability: Tracking. Author Brian Merchant subscribed to the tracking service Streak, and was astounded when it told him when an email he sent was opened, and on what kind of device. "I glanced at my inbox, privy to details that gave me maybe a little too much information," he writes. [...]

"Mailsploit" Lets Hackers Forge Perfect Email Spoofs
Pretending to be someone you're not in an email has never been quite hard enough—hence phishing, that eternal scourge of internet security. But now one researcher has dug up a new collection of bugs in email programs that in many cases strip away even the existing, imperfect protections against email impersonation, allowing anyone to undetectably spoof a message with no hint at all to the recipient. [...]

How to Use a Templating Language in HTML Email Development
The typical usage is when you render something on the server side. The usual use-case is when you have to add dynamic content to your website, so when you fetch something from your database, you will have to replace some parts in your original template. Besides that, you have basic control-flow in templating languages, for example, if branches and loops. These can help you to create a conditional rendering and to use the same sub-template multiple times. (Just think about a shopping cart, where you [...]

Samsung Email Rendering Check
Samsung is the most popular Android device manufacturer. As of December 2017, Samsung devices held 47% of the Android market share. Huawei comes in a distant second with only 6.6% of Android the market share. A possible reason for Samsung’s dominance in the market is the sheer number of Samsung devices that are available—mobile devices, phablets, and tablets. Devices range from mid- to high-end, and there are even phone series’ that cater to specific geographic regions—for example the Samsung Galaxy [...]

Email is User Experience
People always want to believe that their creation speaks for itself. Thanks to this Field of Dreams “build it and they will come” mentality (plus an irrational fear of coming off as spammy), there’s often a startling disconnect between how much thought and investment goes into building a product?—?and how little goes into emails about it.
