Meet the top 250 Email Experts on Twitter [Infographic+List] – are you connected?

Twitter is growing. Although I myself haven’t posted very much, I do check tweets regularly. If you follow the right people, Twitter is a great way to be the first to know about important news & updates in email marketing.

But who are the right ones? I’m not sure if I know them all. But the machine knows – by doing some nifty calculations. Thus, it’s time to look closer at all the email experts: “Who’s hot, and who’s not?”

Here is what I found:

This is a small core segment of the whole email marketer’s network. There has been quite some data-crunching going on behind the scenes to get to the core. In fact, I mined more than 150.000 Follower relationships. That’s perhaps not “big data”. But it’s big enough anyway…

How to interpret the map?

The circles represent Twitter users. The bigger the dot, the higher is the user rank. The same goes for its color. The highest-ranking experts are the dark blue ones in the center. The least-ranking users (least within just this core segment) find themselves mostly in the outer circle. Numerous other nodes were cut out due to having too few core followers.

What does “rank” mean? The color-coded order is calculated in a similar way as Google did for websites using the PageRank algorithm. The highest-ranking website for a search term is most often referenced by other high-ranking websites within the given context. The same applies on this Twitter segment. Simply put, the big dark blue nodes are the ones, which are most often followed by other reputable nodes.

Another approach would be to rank by the number of followers alone. This results in a completely different order. It is coded as circle size here – the large the node, the more followers it has in this core segment. There are many possible outcomes, depending on your setup.

Last but not least, the lines indicate whom the influential blue nodes follow. The more dark blue lines the better.
